Ball Python Stuck Shed? Here's How to Fix It (and Stop It Coming Back)
A healthy ball python sheds in ONE piece, like a sock. If yours comes off in patches,
or pieces stay stuck around the eyes, tail tip, or neck, that's a stuck shed (dysecdysis) —
and it's almost always a humidity problem, not a sick snake.
Signs you've got a stuck shed
- Flaky patches of dull skin still attached days after the shed started
- Retained eye caps (eyes look wrinkled, dented, or cloudy after shed day)
- A tight ring of old skin around the tail tip (this one matters — it can cut off circulation)
Fix it at home
- The soak. Lukewarm water (85–90°F), only as deep as the snake's belly, 20–30 minutes.
A big soaking dish in the enclosure works; a lidded tub with air holes works too. Never leave
a soaking snake unattended.
- The sauna (gentler, our favorite). Line a ventilated tub with a warm, WET towel, put the
snake in for 30–60 minutes. The steam-room humidity loosens shed without the stress of a bath.
- Help — carefully. After soaking, let the snake crawl through a damp towel in your hands.
Skin that doesn't slide off with gentle friction stays for the next round. NEVER pull skin,
and NEVER peel eye caps yourself — that's a vet's job.
- Raise the room. Bump enclosure humidity to 70–80% until the shed is fully off.
Stop it coming back
- Keep humidity 60–70% normally, 70–80% during a shed cycle. A digital hygrometer tells the
truth; the dial gauges lie.
- Give your python a humidity hide: a hide packed with damp sphagnum moss. Snakes seek it
out before a shed and it fixes most stuck sheds before they happen.
- Substrate matters: fine coconut fiber holds moisture evenly; chunky coco chips on top keep
the surface dry. A big water bowl on the warm side quietly raises ambient humidity too.
When it's a vet trip
- Eye caps still on after the NEXT full shed
- The tail-tip ring won't loosen after two soaks (circulation risk)
- Skin underneath looks red, black, or weepy (possible infection or burn)
- Stuck sheds every single cycle despite correct humidity — worth a checkup
