Leopard Gecko Shed Stuck on Toes? The 15-Minute Fix

Leopard geckos shed head to tail — and the tail is where it goes wrong. Skin left wrapped

around toes cuts off circulation, and toes lost to stuck shed don't grow back. The good

news: caught early, it's a 15-minute fix.

Catch it early (check after every shed)

  • White/grey rings of old skin around one or more toes
  • Toe tips looking pinched, dark, or swollen
  • Your gecko soaking in its water dish more than usual (it's trying to help itself)

The fix

  • Warm soak. Shallow lukewarm water (80–85°F), belly-deep, 10–15 minutes. Let the

gecko stand in it — most tolerate this well.

  • The sauna box (for geckos that hate baths). A ventilated tub lined with warm, wet

paper towels, 20–30 minutes. Steam does the loosening.

  • Cotton swab roll. With the skin soft, roll a damp cotton swab gently over the toe,

pushing the old skin toward the tip. It should slide off like a glove finger. If it

resists, soak longer — NEVER pull dry shed, and never use tweezers on a toe.

  • Repeat daily until every toe is clean. Most cases clear in 1–3 sessions.

Stop it coming back

  • A proper humidity hide. One hide stuffed with damp sphagnum moss, kept on the warm

side. Geckos retreat there to shed, and the moisture does the work while they rub

against the moss. This single change prevents nearly all stuck sheds.

  • Keep the humid hide damp, not dripping — re-mist every couple of days.
  • Rough surfaces help: a piece of cork bark or a textured rock gives them something to

rub against.

When it's a vet trip

  • A toe is black, shriveled, or the skin ring won't budge after 3–4 days of soaks
  • Swelling is spreading up the foot
  • Your gecko stops eating or a toe looks infected (red, weepy)

A vet can remove retained shed safely under magnification — much cheaper than treating

a necrotic toe.

Products that help

  • Premium Sphagnum Moss — the humidity-hide filler that prevents the whole problem
  • Exo Terra Water Dish — a soak-sized water bowl for smaller reptiles too
